  2. Sigma Series -- The Gut Microbiome: Implications for Health on Earth and in Space

    September 21, 2021, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM @

    Streaming online through NASA Langley

Each human hosts a microbiome in their gut that is home to more than 1,000 species of bacteria, archaea, viruses, and eukaryotic microbes. These gut microorganisms are highly involved in numerous metabolic reactions that influence normal host physiology and metabolism. Additionally, an enormous portion of the body’s immune function is positioned in the human gut. This means that the bacteria living in your gastrointestinal tract play numerous roles in maintaining your health. Specifically, the health of your gut can influence your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia. This week's speaker, Amina Zeidan, Ph.D., is a research fellow with NASA Langley’s Space Radiation Risk Research Group. As a translational scientist, she conducts research on the human gut microbiome and gut responses to infectious diseases, environmental exposures, and stressful environments, such as those experienced by astronauts.

  1. Hampton Carousel

    June 1, 2021, 11:00 AM - December 31, 2021, 8:00 PM @ Carousel Park & Hampton Carousel

After being closed for over a year due to the pandemic, the Hampton Carousel opens for the 2021 season on June 1 with COVID protocols. Located in Carousel Park and operated by the Hampton History Museum, the former Buckroe Beach carousel is one of the City of Hampton’s most treasured historic assets. Built in 1920, the carousel is completely restored to its original beauty and housed in its own weather-protected pavilion at Carousel Park on the city’s downtown waterfront. It is one of only 170 antique wooden merry-go-rounds still existing in the U.S. Hand crafted by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for the Buckroe Beach Amusement Park, Hampton's Carousel is a whirling tribute to the skill of its creators. The Hampton Carousel will operate under federal, state and City of Hampton COVID-19 protocols. Guests will be required to wear masks when inside the carousel building, practice social distancing, and use hand-sanitizer before and after rides.

  2. Historic Black Beaches: Bay Shore and Other Memorable Sands

    September 18, 2021, 9:00 AM - February 27, 2022, 5:00 PM @ Hampton History Museum - Changing Gallery

African-Americans in many waterfront communities, denied access to public beaches, pooled resources to create their own coastal retreats. Many became vacation destinations featuring hotels, music halls and amusement parks. All created special memories, from swimming to church services, family fun to formal dances. Two complementary exhibits explore some of these special places. "Memorable Sands: Beaches of Northeast North Carolina and Southeast Virginia,” a traveling exhibit from the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C., looks at five beaches in North Carolina and Virginia Beach. Hampton’s own Bay Shore Beach, located next to Buckroe Beach for more than 75 years, is featured in a separate exhibit highlighted by numerous photographs and artifacts from Robinson and Leonard’s collection, along with images and items from the museum’s collection.
