    September 1, 2021 - October 31, 2021

Sign up for the International Coastal Cleanup from Sept. 1-Oct. 31 by registering to clean up a location of your choice. For more than 30 years, the International Coastal Cleanup has been rallying communities with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastlines. Since the cleanup started, millions of volunteers worldwide have collected more than 340 million pounds of trash. Cleanup equipment — like litter sticks, safety vests, gloves, and trash bags – are available for those in Hampton who do not have their own equipment. Go to Hampton.gov/HCCC for the registration link and more information under the Quick Links tab. Volunteers can also contact Cris Ausink at causink@hampton.gov or call 757-727-1158.

  1. Hampton Carousel

    June 1, 2021, 11:00 AM - December 31, 2021, 8:00 PM @ Carousel Park & Hampton Carousel

Take a Spin Back in Time! Located in Carousel Park and operated by the Hampton History Museum, the former Buckroe Beach carousel is one of the City of Hampton’s most treasured historic assets. Built in 1920, the carousel is completely restored to its original beauty and housed in its own weather-protected pavilion at Carousel Park on the city’s downtown waterfront. It is one of only 170 antique wooden merry-go-rounds still existing in the U.S. Hand crafted by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for the Buckroe Beach Amusement Park, Hampton's Carousel is a whirling tribute to the skill of its creators. The Hampton Carousel will operate under federal, state and City of Hampton COVID-19 protocols. Guests will be required to wear masks when inside the carousel building, practice social distancing, and use hand-sanitizer before and after rides.

  2. Historic Black Beaches: Bay Shore and Other Memorable Sands

    September 18, 2021, 9:00 AM - February 27, 2022, 5:00 PM @ Hampton History Museum - Changing Gallery

African-Americans in many waterfront communities, denied access to public beaches, pooled resources to create their own coastal retreats. Many became vacation destinations featuring hotels, music halls and amusement parks. All created special memories, from swimming to church services, family fun to formal dances. Two complementary exhibits explore some of these special places. "Memorable Sands: Beaches of Northeast North Carolina and Southeast Virginia,” a traveling exhibit from the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C., looks at five beaches in North Carolina and Virginia Beach. Hampton’s own Bay Shore Beach, located next to Buckroe Beach for more than 75 years, is featured in a separate exhibit highlighted by numerous photographs and artifacts from Robinson and Leonard’s collection, along with images and items from the museum’s collection.
