  1. Buckroe Beach Farmers Market: Pet Market

    The Buckroe Beach Farmers Market is open each Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., May 4 through Nov. 16. June 1 is a fitness market, Sept. 21 will be vintage-themed, and Oct. 19 is a pet market. Themed markets run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Vendors will be located on the grassy area surrounding the Buckroe Beach gazebo and will sell local produce, baked goods, sausage, seafood, jarred food items and more.

  4. Fort Monroe Ghost Walk

    Join a walking tour to explore some of the unexplainable phenomena surrounding historic Fort Monroe. This year the tour will dive into the history and mystery of the buildings and grounds inside the stone fortress. Tours will feature the interiors of the Chapel of the Centurion and Quarters 15 next door to the Chapel. Rattling windows, late night footsteps, Civil War soldiers, bedside figures in the dark, broken grandfather clocks sounding in the dead of night and oddly coincidental fires: these are just a few of the encounters you will hear about when you join us for this year’s Fort Monroe Ghost Walk, Where History Meets Mystery. All ticket sales are final and there will be no refunds. Tours are rain or shine. This is an outdoor, walking tour about half a mile long lasting about an hour. Be advised that many areas and buildings at Fort Monroe are not handicapped accessible. This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 12. Ticket prices include processing fees.

  5. Harlem 100: A Harlem Renaissance Celebration

    In celebration of its 100th anniversary, The Harlem Renaissance comes alive in a thrilling multi-media show that pays tribute to the sights and sounds of legendary artists that defined a generation. Created in collaboration with the National Jazz Museum, Harlem 100 brings to life the legendary songs and words of Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, and others. The modern variety show pays homage to the famous acts that once appeared at the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club and other celebrated venues of the Harlem Renaissance. Hosted by Michael Mwenso and featuring a nine-piece band and three dancers, Harlem 100 shines a spotlight on one of the most culturally significant periods in American history.

  2. 2019 Virginia Artists Juried Exhibition

    This much anticipated, annual juried exhibition showcases the talents of many of Virginia’s finest artists and craftsmen. This exhibition features a $1,500 Best in Show prize; the David J. Levinson Photography Award for $1,000; the David and Sandra Hillerson Memorial Award for $500; as well as awards for First, Second, and Third Places and several awards of distinction in a variety of media. Artworks from all styles, genres, and media will be selected. This year, the Visual Arts Center is honored to welcome Jeffrey Allison, the Paul Mellon Collection educator at VMFA, as juror for the exhibition. Mr. Allison, also a professional photographer, received a BA in photography and film from Virginia Intermont College and an MFA in photography from VCU.

  3. Sherman Watkins: Something for Everyone

    Virginia Artists 2018 Best in Show Winner Sherman Watkins presents his solo exhibition, Something for Everyone, in the Annex Gallery. Watkins is an Air Force veteran and retired illustrator from the United States Air Force Space Shuttle Program. A Hampton resident born in Danville, Virginia, he began painting at the age of 15, has exhibited internationally, and has received countless awards.

  4. A Taste of the Beautiful: African Impact on American Culture

    “A Taste for the Beautiful” showcases the works of numerous artists that have attended Hampton University, and have been influenced directly and indirectly by African culture. This show includes works by guest artists Kwabena Ampfo-Anti, Chinedu Okala, and Solomon Isekeije, who provide powerful visual statements that relate to HUMA’s African Gallery and Dr. William H. Shepherd’s extensive collection of Kuba artifacts. These artists work in a variety of styles and media; this show aims to provide them long overdue recognition.

Hampton History Museum Carousel Schedule

  1. Haunted Horse Rides at the Hampton Carousel

    Trick or Treating with the Headless Horseman and free candy are part of the fun in store for visitors to “Haunted Horse Rides” at the historic Hampton Carousel Tuesday through Sunday, October 1 through November 3, 11 am - 8 pm. Located in Carousel Park, Downtown Hampton, the Hampton Carousel will be decorated for the season of ghosts and goblins, with costumed carousel staff giving candy to visitors. The finely carved and painted horses will also be decorated, with one of the horses occupied by the infamous Headless Horseman.
