    "Civil War Journey" is an extraordinary touring exhibition organized by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Eyewitness accounts and images from the Civil War memoir of Union soldier, cartographer, and Confederate prisoner of war Robert Knox Sneden are showcased in an exhibition of 45 watercolor maps and drawings that provide a unique and mesmerizing perspective on the Civil War. The exhibit opens Nov. 3, 2018.

  2. Miniatures and Small Works by Tidewater Artists

    More than 250 artists living in Hampton Roads were invited to create miniature or small artworks in any media. Miniature two-dimensional works were required to be no larger than 20 square inches; 4 by 5 inches for example. Small two-dimensional works were required to be no larger than 80 square inches. The resulting two-dimensional and three-dimensional works compose a total of more than 350 artworks. Media represented include drawing, painting, watercolor, pastel, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and crafts. There is a wide range of styles, techniques, content, imagery and intent. This year, artwork may be removed at the time of purchase.

  1. Sigma Series — Immune System: The Seventh Sense

    Immune cells and their derived molecules have a major impact on brain function, but immune cells are not found within the brain’s functional tissue. Dr. Jonathan "Jony" Kipnis's research group discovered lymphatic vessels that drain brain molecules and immune cells to the lymph nodes. This previously undiscovered communication between the central nervous and immune systems suggests new approaches for developing treatments for several neurological and psychiatric disorders, including multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Kipnis is chairman of the Neuroscience Department at the University of Virginia.
