  1. When the Computer Wore a Skirt: NASA's Human Computers

    January 21, 2017, 10:00 AM - June 1, 2018, 5:00 PM @ Hampton History Museum

In 1935 a group of five women came to Langley to form a computer pool to process all the data coming in from wind tunnel and flight tests. It began as an experiment, but became something much bigger. By 1942, the human computers had become essential to operations. A memo that April stated: "The engineers admit themselves that the girl computers do the work more rapidly and accurately than they could." In the 1940’s Langley also began recruiting African-American women as human computers, but due to segregation laws these "West Area Computers" were kept separate from their white counterparts. This changed in the 1950s as NACA (later NASA) integrated and the “human computers” extended into the broader scientific community at NASA. By the 1960s they numbered in the hundreds. This exhibit features three of these pioneers: Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, and Hampton native-Mary Jackson.

  2. Jamestown : A Spectacular Failure

    March 5, 2018, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Hampton History Museum

Join Dr. Thomas Hall, Associate Director of the Public History Center at Christopher Newport University, as he explores the 1607 Virginia Company of London in creating the first permanent English settlement. The company was created by royal charter in 1606 by King James I with the purpose of establishing settlements. Its territory ranged from Cape Fear, NC, north to the Long Island Sound. Dr. Hall will answer three intriguing questions concerning the spectacular failure of the Virginia Company of London, which brought to Jamestown in 1607 and thereafter boatloads of settlers--many of whom perished for no good reason. Why did a company with free reign to exploit the bulk of North America fail so miserably? How did 17th-century English merchants and gentry, united in common cause against Spain, derail any possibility for the firm’s success? How did a collapsed company form the basis for the most economically important English colony until well into the 1800s?
