    The Hampton Roads Convention Center welcomes back Nov. 2-4 more than 3,000 otkau (fanboys and fangirls) to NekoCon, a Japanese anime convention featuring everything from cosplay to LARP (live-action-role-playing) in which attendees dress up as their favorite anime characters and become part of the action. Members are welcome to attend various panels and workshops, purchase merchandise in the dealers room, and be a part of main attractions like karaoke contests, art shows, and nightly dances.

Participants receive homework assistance, play group games, and bond with friends in a safe, structured environment. Dinner and snack will be provided. Cost is $25 per week for Parks and Recreation members, and $35 per week for non-members.   1. Start Peninsula

    Start Peninsula is a weekend-long event to stimulate entrepreneurial growth in the local community by connecting early stage businesses to validation, opportunities and resources. Start Peninsula is part pitch competition, part business education and part celebration of local businesses in Hampton Roads. Dozens of entrepreneurs connect with business leaders and mentors during this event that showcases early stage businesses. Start Peninsula has been held annually in different Peninsula localities since 2012. Jason Calacanis will be the keynote speaker on Friday. Calacanis is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor, podcaster and writer and has written a best-selling book, "Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups." Calacanis has invested in 150 early-stage startups including six that have already achieved billion-dollar valuations. His investments include Uber and Thumbtack.

  1. ‘NASA: Hampton Takes Flight’ exhibit

    The story of Hampton’s leading role in aeronautics and space exploration is presented in the exhibit “NASA: Hampton Takes Flight.” In this update to the museum’s Hampton History Galleries, visitors can experience 100 years of NASA history from its early days as NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) to the Space Race. The exhibit celebrates the NACA and NASA’s singular history and immeasurable contribution to the Hampton community. This installation features artifacts and images recently acquired from NASA Langley Research Center. This will be the first step in refreshing the museum’s 20th Century Galleries, and accompanies “When the Computer Wore a Skirt: NASA’s Human Computers,” that opened in January 2017.

  1. Haunted Horse Rides on Hampton Carousel

    Trick or Treating with the Headless Horseman and free candy are part of the fun of Haunted Horse Rides at the historic Hampton Carousel this Halloween season. Rides are Tuesdays through Sundays, Oct. 9-Nov. 4. The carousel and its finely carved and painted horses will be decorated, and carousel staff will be in costume for a frightfully good time. But beware — one of the carousel horses will be occupied by the infamous Headless Horseman. Rides only $1. Built in 1920, the carousel is completely restored to its original beauty and housed in its own weather-protected pavilion on the city’s downtown waterfront. Call 757-727-1102 for more information.
