The annual fundraising event benefits local hunger-fighting organizations. Guests sample soups from local participating restaurants and take home a commemorative bowl contributed by local artists, as a reminder of the empty bowls needed to be filled. Tickets are available at Hampton History Museum Gift Shop, 120 Old Hampton Lane in Hampton and online at EmptyBowlsVaPeninsula.org or brownpapertickets.com/event/4054289. The event typically sells out in advance. Participating restaurants: Circa 1918, The Point, Schlesinger's, Park Lane Tavern, Thank Goodness It's Home Made, Brown Chicken Brown Cow, Riverwalk Restaurant, Huntington House, and Corner Bistro.

The Hampton/Newport News affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will offer its spring 2019 Family to Family Education Program 12 consecutive Tuesdays, Feb. 12-April 30. Family to Family is a free, 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one,living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being. The course includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions. Thousands of families describe the program as life-changing. The program is taught by trained teachers who are also family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness. Pre-registration is required. The goal of this program is to help parents develop positive family-management and discipline practices and get parents and teens working together to build skills needed for reducing risks to the teen’s health and safety. Class meets on Mondays. Must attend all 5 classes to receive Certificate of Completion.
