  1. NEA Big Read Closing Block Party for 'Citizen: An American Lyric'

    March 23, 2019, 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM @ Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center

This closing event showcases poetry, artwork, and responses to "Citizen: An American Lyric," by Claudia Rankine. There will be music, food and drinks, and entertainment throughout the evening. Before the closing event, join a community discussion about "Citizen." This powerful work covers topics such as race and identity through vignettes, short stories, essays, poetry, and artwork. Ages 13 and up are welcome. The Hampton Library and Citizens' Unity Commission want residents to come together for a series of book discussions that will end with a "reading block party" on March 23. It's all part of One City One Book, a unique reading program designed to promote literacy and build a sense of community. The program is part of The BIG READ, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest. For more information, call 757-727-1312.

  2. Living Life and Losing Labels

    March 30, 2019, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Northampton Community Center

Middle and high school students are invited to help reduce social biases, labels, and stereotypes when it comes to gender and sexual orientation by joining a community discussion on Saturday, March 30. The goal is to build an alliance between gay and straight students that will encourage inclusion — not division — and reduce fear, bullying and high-risk behavior. The discussion is sponsored by Hampton's Citizens' Unity Commission and the LGBTQ Awareness Committee. In addition to the open discussion, there will be free food and music. Registration is required: click the link at right or call Hampton's Citizen Contact Center at 3-1-1 or 757-727-8311.
