Peninsula SPCA's 17th Annual Barktoberfest Festival is a fun time for all, located on the beautiful waterfront of Downtown Hampton. Zimbabwean female acapella group Nobuntu, an African concept meaning humbleness, love, unity, and family from a woman’s point of view, has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances ranging from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. Performances consist of pure voices, minimalistic percussion, and traditional instruments such as Mbira and authentic dance movements. The group has performed all around the world and has been nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in 2015. They are also a two-time winner of Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards in 2017 and 2019. Representing a new generation of young African women wanting to sing, celebrate, and preserve their culture through art, Nobuntu believes that music can be an important drive for change. This world-renowned acapella group will inspire you to challenge what is normal while sharing the beauty in their African culture.

Riddick Dance creates and presents a broad dance repertory to enrich the range of cultural offerings of the Hampton Roads region. Performances intricately combine storytelling and movement to produce thought-provoking works on stage. African American women have created a plethora of music based upon personal and historical experiences. The depth of emotion, beauty of line and complexity of harmonies adds much to the compilation of music by African Americans. The women highlighted have blossomed throughout seemingly insurmountable obstacles to create music that is artistically thought-provoking, and ground-breaking in their approach to life as they have maneuvered through the challenges presented them on a daily basis. Rising above hardships, they prove that music makes it possible to bring forth diamonds!

This widely observed holiday focuses on remembering family members and friends who have passed away. This originates from the ancient indigenous peoples of Mexico who believed that the souls of the dead return each year to visit with their living relatives - to eat, drink and be merry. Just like they did when they were living. This free family-friendly event includes a traditional colored straw demonstration by Cesar Carbajal as well as the preparation of an altar where members of the community can share a prayer, light a candle or bring a memento to place as an offering for loved ones. Activities include face painting, costume contest, sidewalk chalk drawing, and exploring the VMFA On the Road Artmobile. Craft stations include making paper marigolds, Day of the Dead masks, skull magnets, and creating papel picado. Food trucks will be onsite.

Featuring a dozen musicians, with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages on six continents. After making its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London. Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz Records (named after bandleader Thomas Lauderdale’s dog), selling over 3 million albums worldwide. In 2019, the band released two EPs featuring the vocals of Pink Martini’s newest members Jimmie Herrod and Edna Vazquez.

The exhibit combines content from the Virginia Library’s 2017 exhibit “Teetotalers and Moonshiners: Virginia’s Prohibition Experiment” with research and artifacts from the Hampton History Museum on the local experience. "Hampton's Prohibition Story" features myriad items to tell the story, including dozens of photographs; numerous bottles, jugs and other containers; games, smoking accoutrements, beverage dispenser, signs and materials of saloon culture; service ware, promotional items and memorabilia from Point Comfort resorts, Phoebus police and fire department items, doctor bag and instruments; and moonshine still components on loan from the Museum of the Albemarle. The exhibit continues through February 4, 2024.

Join us for the annual Tour de Fort on historic Fort Monroe. Explore the area by bicycle through one of our five guided rides. With rides ranging from 3 to 20 miles, there is something for everyone. Rides explore Fort Monroe, Phoebus, and Buckroe, and start and end at Fort Monroe.

The festival offers a variety of children's activities, hayrides, master gardening, punkin’ chunkin’, storytelling, live entertainment, and much more. The 2023 festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Handicap parking is available in the farm parking lot; all others may catch a quick, continuous shuttle from the Bass Pro/BJ’s Parking Lot across Pine Chapel Road, or from overflow parking at the (former) Colonial Downs lot at 1909 Commerce Drive. Free shuttles begin at 9:30am and end with the last rider (approximately 5:15pm each day)
