What can be done if the sidewalk is scaled off and badly deteriorated on the surface?: The city will only replace sections of sidewalk like that if they pose a safety risk to pedestrians and the scaling is 1.5 inches or deeper. Lightly scaled sections of sidewalk need not be repaired or replaced.

1. How can I reach your 3-1-1 Customer Call Center?: If you are calling from the City of Hampton, simply dial 3-1-1 on your touch tone or rotary dial phone. From outside the city of Hampton, please dial (757) 727-8311. The call center is available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

2. The walkway at my house is raised, cracked, dropped, or badly scaled; will the city repair or replace it for me?: Residential walkways are the homeowner’s responsibility for repair or replacement. If the city has done work at your home and disturbed the walkway, we will repair or replace it as necessary.

3. 4. Who takes care of sidewalk repairs on private property, in shopping centers, or at business locations?: The individual property management company or the owner of the property would be responsible for these repairs or replacement.

5. Whom should I call to report a sidewalk that needs to be repaired?: Call the 3-1-1 Customer Call Center. 6. Will the city replace my sidewalk if it is cracked in several places?: If the sidewalk is on grade (level) and does not present a tripping or safety hazard the city does not replace it.

7. Will the city replace my sidewalk if it is raised and causing a tripping or safety hazard?: If the sidewalk is raised between 0.5 and 1 inch, the city will grind the raised portion down to eliminate the tripping hazard. Sidewalks that are raised 1.5 to 2 inches will be removed and replaced by the concrete crew. The supervisor will also have a temporary asphalt patch put in place until the repair work can be scheduled to help minimize the safety hazard.

8. Will the city replace the sidewalk around the curb drop inlet (CDI or catch basin) where the water drains in the street?: If the sidewalk has dropped enough to be a safety hazard, or it is stopping the drainage flow, the city would replace it with the proper ties to the CDI or catch basin.
