[ARCHIVED] City manager, police, fire chiefs take challenge

Aug. 21, 2014 - Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting, Police Chief Terry L. Sult and Fire Chief David E. Layman joined the city’s SWAT team and other public safety professionals Wednesday to take the ice bucket challenge.

Created to raise money and awareness about the fatal nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease - the challenge has become a national phenomenon, with videotapes and pictures of challengers posted on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and elsewhere.

As part of the challenge, ordinary men, women and children, movie stars, business leaders and top athletes, donate money to fight ALS, challenge others to make a donation, and then get doused with ice water. As of Thursday, the ALS Association had received $41.8 million in donations since July 29 – compared to $2.1 million during the same time last year.

In a video available on the police department’s Facebook page, Bunting, Sult and Layman called on their local counterparts to take the challenge. Hampton raised more than $500 for ALS during the filming of the video.
