[ARCHIVED] Sheriff B.J. Roberts, 69th President of the National Sheriffs’ Association

Hampton Sheriff B.J. Roberts was sworn in as the 69th president of the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) on Wednesday, June 30 at the 70th Annual NSA Summer Conference in Anaheim, California. The NSA was chartered in 1940 and is involved in a number of programs to enable sheriffs, their deputies, chiefs of police and others in the field of criminal justice to perform their jobs in the best possible manner and to better service the people in their jurisdictions.

Sheriff Roberts’ swearing in as president of the NSA marks the first African-American in the 70 year history of the organization to preside over the 18,990 members. Roberts was first elected to the Executive Committee of the NSA in 2006 as Sergeant-at-Arms. The NSA membership boasts 3,049 of the 3,083 Sheriffs in the United States.

Roberts was sworn in by John Jones, Executive Director of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association. Virginia Delegate, Kenny Alexander read declarations and noble remarks from Virginia Governor Bob McDonald, United States Senator Mark Warner and United States Congressman Bobby Scott.
