[ARCHIVED] HRT to Resume Bus, Paratransit Services Saturday

Norfolk, VA – Hampton Roads Transit will resume full bus and para-transit services on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, following three full days of work to remove snow and ice from transit centers, shelters and bus stops that were buried during a recent snow storm.

Regular Saturday bus service will begin at 4:40 a.m. Light rail and ferry service resumed two days after the storm. Restoring bus and para-transit services took longer because problems with snow and ice buildup on curbs made it difficult for customers to board and alight.

“We thank the public for its patience,” said William Harrell, president and CEO of HRT. “We fully understand the challenges that many face when there is no transit service. The safety of our customers and operators is of paramount importance.”

In the days following the storm, HRT’s Engineering and Facilities Maintenance staff worked to clear snow from many of the 350 shelters across a six city region, four major transit centers, three main buildings, 19 light rail platforms, ferry docks and park and ride lots. HRT has about 3,000 bus stops.

HRT does not have the manpower or the equipment to remove snow from sidewalks. To help with the overall effort, HRT turned to private contractors who are normally under contract with the agency for help removing snow.
