Council to look at special events, consider apartments at Wednesday's meetings

Jan. 8, 2024 - City Council will consider permits for converting retail space into apartments , expanding a cemetery, and extending hours for a restaurant and lounge during its meetings on  Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Mayor Donnie Tuck will also announce the names of the honorees for this year's Hampton Heroes. That ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Hampton Heroes Plaza.

On the agenda for the 6:30 p.m. legislative meeting are:

  • A permit to change the ground floor of part of a retail building into nine apartments at Peninsula Town Center. The proposal is for the back part of the building that houses Encore Shoes and faces Merchant Lane.
  • A permit for a cemetery expansion along a small parcel of land next to the extension of Coliseum Drive at Hampton Roads Center Parkway. It adjoins the existing cemetery.
  • A permit to expand the hours of the downtown Karma Restaurant and Lounge.
  • Consideration of shifting the entity that leases and operates the golf driving range on Seldendale Drive off Mercury Boulevard to new owners.

In the afternoon work session at 1 p.m., City Council will hear a report on the city's special events.

Both City Council meetings are open to the public and held in Council Chambers on the eighth floor of City Hall, 22 Lincoln St. See the full agenda. The meetings will be broadcast on the city's channel at Cox 47 and Verizon 22. They will also be streamed at hampton.gov/tv
