Oct. 9, 2023 - Housing repair and rehabilitation programs are on the agenda for Wednesday's afternoon City Council meeting, and two requests to add more apartments at Peninsula Town Center will be reviewed in the evening meeting.

Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority and city staff have been studying programs that provide assistance with home repairs for lower-income people. The programs, mostly funded by the Housing and Urban Development Department, carry a host of federal requirements that often cause projects to take several months. The Council will hear about options to speed that process up, especially to fast-track homeowners who need urgent repairs, at the 1 p.m. work session.

In the evening meeting, Council will hear two proposals for additional apartments at Peninsula Town Center:

• One is seeking to convert retail space behind Shoe Dept. Encore, facing Merchant Way, into nine apartments.
• The other would add new buildings containing 21 townhouse-style apartments in green space located along Cunningham Drive and along Hartford Road by the entrance to the parking garage. 

Council will also consider:

• Adding two water plans to the Community Plan, which is the planning guide for land uses in the city. The two plans are for the Newmarket Creek area and the downtown, Phoebus, and Buckroe areas. (These are the city's first two water plans; others areas are being studied.)
• Transferring a sliver of land on Maple Avenue to the housing authority.

Both meetings are open to the public and will be held in City council Chambers on the 8th floor of City Hall, 22 Lincoln Street. They will be broadcast on Cox 47 and Verizon 22 channels and streamed at hampton.gov/livetv
