[ARCHIVED] Former mayor Ward named Virginia secretary of Natural Resources

Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe named former Hampton Mayor Molly Joseph Ward secretary of Natural Resources Thursday. Ward served as Hampton mayor for five years before stepping down in September to take a job at the White House.

"The City of Hampton and I congratulate Molly Ward and look forward to working with her as the state's Secretary of Natural Resources," said Hampton Mayor George Wallace. "I have confidence she will be as good in that job as she was as our mayor."

According to the state website, the secretary of Natural Resources advises the governor on natural resources issues and works to advance the governor's top environmental priorities. The secretary oversees six agencies that protect and restore Virginia's natural and historic resources, including the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Marine Resources Commission.

Before she was elected mayor Ward served as city treasurer. She is an attorney and of counsel with the law firm of McDermottWard, P.C.

McAuliffe and his team take office Jan. 11.
