Sept. 8, 2022 — Bicyclists of all ages and skill levels will pedal their way around the historic grounds of Fort Monroe on Sunday, Sept. 25, as Bike Walk Hampton hosts its annual Tour de Fort ride.

The free event, started in 2017, has become popular with riders around the region. It offers five different guided routes ranging in length and pace:

• A 20-mile ride for experienced cyclists, keeping a pace of about 15-17 mph and covering not only the fort, but also the Phoebus, Buckroe and Fox Hill neighborhoods.

• A 12-mile ride that keeps a pace of about 11-14 mph and will go through the Phoebus and Buckroe neighborhoods.

• A 7-mile ride at a casual pace that stays on the grounds of Fort Monroe and is convenient for those riding beach cruisers. This is the most similar ride to Bike Walk Hampton’s popular Sunday cruises.

• A ride of 2-3 miles that includes stops at various points where the riders will learn more about the history of Fort Monroe.

• A family ride of 3-4 miles that is ideal for younger riders and their parents but is open to anyone looking to ease into the world of cycling.

The bike rides are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, beginning and ending at Oozlefinch Beers & Brewing, located at 81 Patch Road on the grounds of the fort. Riders can start gathering at 1:30. The event is hosted by the city in conjunction with Oozlefinch, with volunteers from the Peninsula Bicycling Association. Per Hampton city code, riders 14 and under are required to wear helmets.
