April 1, 2022 - The Norfolk-based 757 Makerspace opened its new location this morning on the grounds of Fort Monroe with a ribbon-cutting ceremony  attended by owner Beau Turner and several Hampton city leaders.

The creative studio and workspace occupies 12,733 square feet that features wood and metal shops, 3-D printers, labs for sewing and electronics and much more. It will provide instruction, tools and collaboration for inventors, entrepreneurs and creative types of all ages. Turner said that by adding a location on the Peninsula, 757 Makerspace can expand its reach to draw people from all across the region.

"We looked at other places, but we kept coming back to the spot on Fort Monroe," Turner said. "It's such a historic location, and such a beautiful spot. Right here, in between Firehouse Coffee and the Oozlefinch brewery, it just feels right."

Turner and Mayor Donnie Tuck officially cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening. The ceremony was also attended by City Manager Mary Bunting, as well as members of city council and the Fort Monroe Authority. The new location was made possible through the cooperation of Hampton City Schools, the Economic Development Authority, the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center and StartWheel, making use of a $100,000 grant from the state's Department of Housing and Community Development.

Mayor Tuck said: “We are delighted to have 757 Makerspace in Hampton. Our city is committed to nurturing small and startup businesses, and to encourage budding entrepreneurs needing a place where they can collaborate with other creative individuals.”

Hampton City Schools sees this as part of its vision for the Academy of Entrepreneurship and Information Design at Kecoughtan High School. Seth Black, director of  career and technical education, said: "Our current curriculum, the lab spaces at Kecoughtan High School and 757 Makerspace are perfect for synergistic creativity."

The Hampton location of 757 Makerspace is at 16 Murray Street on the grounds of Fort Monroe..
