[ARCHIVED] Lane closure on bridge will affect rush hour traffic on I-64

mallorystreetbridge 2

March 28, 2022 — The Mallory Street Bridge will be reduced to one-way traffic on weekdays from 3-6 p.m. starting on Friday, April 1. The lane closure, planned for two months, is designed to prevent motorists from using Phoebus as a detour to bypass rush hour traffic on Interstate 64.

The pilot project will have a heavy impact on eastbound motorists headed from the Peninsula to Norfolk through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

From 3-6 p.m. weekdays, motorists will not be able to use the Mallory Street Bridge to get from Phoebus to I-64 eastbound. Exceptions will be made for emergency vehicles or vehicles involved in the HRBT construction project.

The closure is aimed at drivers who get off the congested highway at earlier exits and then drive through residential streets to re-enter I-64 eastbound at Mallory Street, just before the bridge-tunnel. During the affected weekday hours, motorists approaching the bridge on Mallory Street will be directed onto westbound I-64.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will employ roadway signs alerting motorists of the ramp closure, and the city is working with Apple maps and Waze to update their apps and alert drivers that the popular detour is not available.
