Feb. 7, 2022 — The city is allocating federal funds from the American Rescue Plan to be awarded as community grants through the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities. These grants are designed to fund community-based organizations and neighborhood groups working to create positive activities, services and programs for residents between the ages of 14-24.

 Applications are now being accepted for grants under the headings of Awareness, Prevention, Re-entry and Intervention. The types of grants are defined as follows:

 Awareness grants: For programs that involve events, seminars or short courses designed to create awareness of the impact of youth violence, trauma and adverse childhood experiences, and to influence positive change.

 Prevention: For programs designed to engage youth and young adults from elevated risk populations in activities to build supportive relationships and social skills outside of school hours.

 Re-entry: For programs that address the challenges of re-entry faced by residents who have been in the correctional system, such as housing, employment, literacy, mental health and family issues.

 Intervention: For programs that attempt to teach young residents alternatives to violent behavior while developing strategies to make positive life changes. 

 The grants are open to nonprofit organizations, but not open to government agencies, schools or for-profit businesses. Grants will be considered up to $10,000, with a 25-percent match requirement. The city reserves the right to offer a smaller grant than requested.
