[ARCHIVED] The Mayor's Book Club is asking for volunteers and sponsors

mayor

Dec. 7, 2021 — The Hampton Mayor's Book Club is asking for more volunteer readers and sponsors after a significant drop in funding and classroom readers from the impact of Covid-19.

The Mayor's Book Club is a city literacy program funded primarily through public donations and grants and staffed by volunteer readers. It promotes early reading as a core value for children by providing free books monthly, between September and May, to all pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, as well as organized readings and books to all pre-kindergarten through first-grade classrooms in the city of Hampton.

In response to these needs, the Mayor's Book Club is urgently looking for volunteers to read to classes and for sponsors to help the program continue providing books to students and classrooms.

Volunteers must complete a new reader orientation before they can begin reading to classrooms. The next available new reader orientation is Dec. 15 at 1:30 p.m. If you are interested in either volunteering or sponsoring this critical program, email the program coordinator, Sandra Chong.
