[ARCHIVED] Airshow-style demonstration highlights drone development in Hampton

Oct. 7, 2021 - Private companies and NASA-Langley Research Center were able to showcase new state-of-the art unmanned aircraft on Wednesday at Fort Monroe in Hampton.

The event, Hampton Roads Autonomy Demonstrations, was sponsored by Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Hampton Roads Chapter and Longbow Fort Monroe, an unmanned systems research and technology center.

The event showcased several unmanned systems companies and their products in a live 3-hour narrated airshow-like demo. The invited audience included government officials, first responders, security companies, port authorities, airports, and military. The goal was raise awareness of currently available autonomous system products, capabilities and technologies and assist companies to connect with end users and decision makers in industry, government and military.

Hampton is becoming a hub for unmanned systems. With research at NASA-Langley and companies such as Longbow, Advanced Aircraft Company, and the new Huntington Ingalls’ Unmanned Center of Excellence, new technology is being developed and commercialized in the city. Unmanned systems in the air, one the land and in the sea have the potential to be an increasing part of Hampton's tax base and employment.
