[ARCHIVED] Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant

news-2

Aug. 4, 2021 - The City of Hampton's Police Division is applying for a 2021 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant that would be used to support police operations and the department's commitment to community outreach. The annual grant is awarded by the federal government based on a community's population and crime statistics.  Hampton would use the $48,878 grant to procure Mobile Data Terminals for the Hampton Police Division Patrol Operations. The public can comment on the application by emailing HamptonPoliceChief@hampton.gov and in person at upcoming City Council meetings. The grant program is named for New York City police officer Edward Byrne who was killed in the line of duty in 1988 while protecting an immigrant witness who agreed to testify against drug dealers. The program is administered by the Office of Justice Programs's Bureau of Justice Assistance, and provides federal criminal justice funding to state, local and tribal jurisdictions.
