Aug. 2, 2021 - Residents who may need help paying their rent are encouraged to apply to the Virginia Rent Relief Program, which was designed to provide housing help during the pandemic. Part of Virginia’s Department of Housing and Community Development, the program includes help for past due rent payments going back to April 1, 2020.

Priority is given to households currently facing eviction, whose income is at or below 50% of the average median income, and/or an adult who has been unemployed for more than 90 days. Because the national eviction moratorium expired last month, all renters are encouraged to apply. Landlords can also seek rent relief on behalf of tenants who cannot pay their rent because of financial hardship resulting from Covid-19.

The RRP application is online [hampton.us2.list-manage.com], but tenants can also call the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia RRP support line, at 757-648-1299, for help applying. There is also information online for landlords with tenants who need help.  If you want to know more about Virginia’s Rent Relief Program, visit www.dhcd.virginia.gov/rmrp [hampton.us2.list-manage.com].
