Minimum age for a Hampton sheriff's deputy lowered to 18 years old

Sheriff Badge

June 2, 2021 — As of today, the Hampton Sheriff's Office will lower the age requirement for a sheriff's deputy to 18. The minimum required age was previously 20. This follows a regional trend in law enforcement to lower the hiring age in an effort to attract a younger qualified candidate with a passion for public service.

The Hampton Sheriff's Office has also partnered with Hampton City Schools through the Academies of Hampton in Law and Public Safety. The academy provides students with a clear path for graduation and a smooth transition from high school to the specific career field.

The starting salary for a deputy is $38,688, plus benefits. Candidates are required to have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Virginia driver’s license. No experience is necessary. Full training is provided.

All applicants must attend an Applicant Orientation Session. Visit our website for dates and times. Applications can be downloaded by visiting the Hampton Sheriff's Office website at www.hampton.gov/sheriff.

If you have any questions, please contact Lieutenant B. White at 757-926-2540.
