[ARCHIVED] New swings, recliners, bike racks add to the fun available at Buckroe Beach this summer

buckroe beach improvements 2021

May 26, 2021 - Beach season officially kicks off this weekend, and visitors to Buckroe Beach will notice some changes as part of improvements to the park and boardwalk this summer. Construction will resume this fall, with the project completed by the summer of 2022.

There are new swings, recliners, and bike racks in vibrant color. There are also new grass plantings between the boardwalk and bike path. And there are two new accessible ramps with “mobi-mats” and “mobi-chairs” to help those with limited mobility (ask any park attendant or “beach ambassador for help with this equipment).

This fall will bring the installation of new, decorative light poles and lighting along the boardwalk, single-swing structures extending further down the boardwalk, and a new human sundial feature near the lifeguard shack. Hampton Watersports is renting jet skis and paddleboards and will offer a full concession menu.

The popular Farmers Market at Buckroe Beach continues through Oct. 30 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. And the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day through New Year’s Eve (except for Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Beaches are open from sunrise to sunset, and lifeguards are on duty May 29 -Sept. 6, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., seven days a week at Buckroe Beach and Fort Monroe (but not at Salt Ponds Beach, where there are intermittent patrols, or at Grandview Beach). Go online for more information about Hampton's beaches.
