City Council sessions Wednesday will include discussions of FY22 spending plan

April 26, 2021 - City Council will hold an afternoon work session Wednesday on the city’s budget for FY22, which begins July 1, and host the first of two public hearings on the spending plan. A presentation on the proposed capital expenditures will be included in the afternoon.  Key projects for FY22 include:

  • $4.5 million in repairs for the Hampton Coliseum, 
  • $1.2 million in investments in housing programs
  • $23 million for school technology and maintenance
  • $10 million in road and traffic improvements (much of that funded by VDOT)
  • $3.8 million for water-related projects (most drainage and water storage funded by the stormwater fee)
  • $3.9 million for sewer infrastructure updates (funded by the proposed increase in fees)
  • $3 million in parks maintenance
  • $6.5 million for a new firing range
  • $1.2 million for jail maintenance

 Additional large projects recommended for funding in the following four years include:

  • $2.5 million for downtown investments
  • $10-11 million a year for school maintenance
  • $26 million for improvements to Little Back River Road
  • $28 million for Resilient Hampton projects to mitigate flooding and reduce pollution
  • $12.6 million to build a new space for the dispatchers that is safer during a hurricane
  • $1 million to begin work on a new fire station for Phoebus

 Both the 1 p.m. workshop and 6:30 p.m. meeting take place in Council Chambers on the 8th floor of Hampton City Hall at 22 Lincoln St. Both meetings are open to the public. There will be a special recognition of citizens making a difference in Hampton at 6 p.m. Social distancing will put a cap on the number of people who can be in the room at the same time. The meetings will be televised on the Hampton Channel (Cox Channel 47 and Verizon Fios Channel 22) and streamed at hampton.gov/livetv.
