Feb. 9, 2021 - A small but enthusiastic group braved sometimes heavy rain Tuesday at the groundbreaking for the Mary Jackson Neighborhood Center in Olde Hampton. Jackson was a Black mathematician and engineer whose story was highlighted in the book and movie “Hidden Figures.” Mayor Donnie Tuck called her an example of the heart and spirit of the community and the city.

Because of covid safety measures, only invited guests could attend in person. However, the public can watch the ceremony on Hampton's Facebook page.

Jackson was NASA’s first black female engineer and was part of the West Area Computing pool that helped get us to the moon. Jackson worked within NASA to further the careers of women throughout her life.
