During this season of thanks, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done during this challenging year to maintain the delivery of services to Hampton residents.  While we have all grown weary of COVID-related safety measures and restrictions, we are entering a phase of heightened risk and must remain diligent in order to protect ourselves as well as our families, colleagues, and customers.

Due to the recent case increases both locally and nationally, I would like to remind you of a few important safety precautions:

Masks remain one of the most important methods in preventing the spread of COVID-19.  The CDC continues to recommend wearing face coverings in public settings to protect the wearer and others.  Within the workplace, you are reminded to wear a mask in common areas and whenever you are in close contact with other people.  Masks can removed when you are in your own work area and distanced at least 6 feet from colleagues.  Whenever serving the public, we are required to wear a mask. These are not just suggestions; they are requirements under the Governor’s Order and our own workplace safety guidelines. 

The CDC has provided guidance about how to select, wear and clean your mask which I strongly recommend viewing at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/about-face-coverings.html.  As a reminder, masks should snugly fit the sides of the face and completely cover the mouth and nose while being secured under the chin.  Masks should be either disposable or made of two-layered, washable fabric and should not have exhalation valves or vents.

Remember to wash your hands before putting on and after taking off your mask. Avoid touching the mask while wearing it and touch only the ear loops or ties when removing it.  Cloth masks should be washed with laundry whenever they get dirty (at least daily) and disposable masks should not be reused. In addition to the use of face coverings, we must remain vigilant about other healthy habits such as social distancing, frequent hand washing/sanitizing, and cleaning surfaces.

Work-related travel has been limited since early in the pandemic. All city departments must continue to exercise their best judgment to limit travel and keep our workforce safe.  While some in-state travel is allowable, virtual options should be utilized whenever possible.  Out-of-state travel should be minimized and all requests require advance approval of the department head and the City Manager.

I remain proud of your perseverance, adaptability, and commitment to our residents and one another.  Hampton continues to rise to the challenge and your dedication reaffirms that we will can overcome any obstacle when we stand “One for All and All for One”.
