Friday, Oct. 8, 2013 - The Hampton VA Medical Center and the Hampton Military Affairs Committee will have a "Veterans Stand Down for Homeless Veteran Resource Fair" on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Y.H. Thomas Community Center, 1300 Thomas St.

The Stand Down is co-sponsored by the Military Affairs Committee and Medical Center with assistance from local Veterans Service Organizations, nonprofit organizations, and community volunteers - all in an effort to reach Veterans in crisis and connect them with programs and services that will help end their homelessness.

Stand Down is a military term used during active war to say the soldier will “stand down” from action to get a hot meal, haircut, and clean clothing. The term was adopted for Veterans during the first Homeless Veteran Stand Down organized in 1988 by a group of Vietnam Veterans in San Diego, Ca. Since then, Stand Downs have been used as an effective method helping homeless Veterans across the nation connect to resources they desperately need.

Traditionally, Veterans from the Vietnam era account for the vast majority of homeless Veterans; however, more Veterans and their families from the Gulf and Afghanistan conflicts are seeking help. The men and women of our armed forces have served their country, and need to know that the Tidewater community is ready to help.

Representatives from various organizations will be available during the event to provide information on a variety of services including: housing, jobs, substance abuse treatment, vocational assistance, and access to VA services. Veterans will be offered a hot meal, haircuts, showers, and opportunities for health screenings. Staff from the Hampton VAMC Homeless programs will help coordinate distribution of donated clothing and various personal items.

Veteran organizations volunteering their time and resources include representatives from the Military Affairs Committee, local Disabled American Veteran (DAV), American Legion and VFW posts, the WAVES, and other service and advocacy organizations. Several local businesses are also contributing their time and talent.
