As we live through events that affect the course of history, it feels like a tide is sweeping us along; challenging our understanding of the forces at play. At the History Museum, we believe the tool we must use to navigate these hidden currents is the powerful rudder of history. When our history is shared and all voices are heard, we can perceive “who we are and why we are the way we are” as a nation.
 
I reach out today to thank you for your help in providing a critical service to our families and friends. Our collection, exhibitions, lectures, educational activities, and oral histories are part of our overall strategy to share the full story of our past. In so doing, we gain understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and strengthen the bonds of community. Without help from you, this is simply not possible.
 
Surprising as it may be, we have some positive news to share. With creativity we have found new ways engage people in the meaning of history and its relevance in our lives. Here are highlights from 2020.
· Our traveling exhibits went around the state and were seen by 15,000 in this year alone.
· After producing 25 new videos since May, they have received over 96,000 views!
· We have created strong partnerships – National Park Service, Fort Monroe Authority, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University, Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, & 2019 State Commemoration (and many more).
· Through prudent stewardship by our board, we face only a small deficit of approximately $5,000 as we close the year (with your help we could eliminate)!
 
So we have much to be thankful for – most especially for your belief in the light history shines on our path forward.
