[ARCHIVED] Order creating Fort Monroe monument signed 2 years ago today

Fort Monroe

Nov. 1, 2013 - Two year ago - on Nov. 1, 2011 - President Obama signed an executive order granting national monument status to Fort Monroe. Today, the former military base is managed cooperatively by the Commonwealth of Virginia, through the Fort Monroe Authority, the City of Hampton, and the National Park Service.

Part of the former base is now the Fort Monroe National Monument, operated by the National Park Service. The monument is open year-round for outdoor activities like walking and exploring the grounds. Meanwhile, the many historic buildings that make up Fort Monroe are being either preserved or reused.
