Feb. 14, 2020 - Hampton’s Sentara Careplex Hospital is among the top 250 of hospitals in the nation for overall clinical excellence, according to the healthgrades website.

Healthgrades’ list is based solely on clinical quality outcomes for 32 conditions and procedures, or consistently exhibit exceptional, comprehensive quality care. "Simply put, patients are more likely to have a successful treatment without major complications - and have a lower chance of dying - at America’s Best Hospitals," the website says.

The Careplex hospital was listed as being "high performing" for patients with heart failure.

“We are extremely proud to have Sentara CarePlex Hospital ranked in the top 5% of hospitals in the United States again this year,” said Kapua Conley, president of Sentara CarePlex Hospital. “Our team works tirelessly to provide outstanding care to our community and it’s a true honor to be recognized as one of the best in the country for the second consecutive time.”

Seven hospitals in Virginia made the list, with two -- Sentara Leigh and Inova Fairfax -- listed in the top 50. Other hospitals in the region listed in the top 250 include Sentara Obici in Suffolk and Sentara Princess Anne in Virginia Beach.

The annual ranking is based on hospital performance, clinical outcomes, patient safety and patient experience. Healthgrades analyzed nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country in 32 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, heart failure, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.

Healthgrades says its mission is "to provide trusted information" for consumers about medical conditions and connects consumers to doctors and hospitals.

U.S. News & World Report issued a broader ranking that includes the top 10 percent of hospitals for 2019-20 in July. That list included 27 hospitals in region, including the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Sentara Careplex in Hampton.
