Announcing the 2019 Yard of the Year!

Pollinator friendly yard of the year

Annually the Yards Are Really Distinctive (YARDS) Contest judges choose one outstanding sustainably beautiful landscape from the Yard of the Month winners selected from May through September. This year the honor goes to Paul and Melanie Stern, Eastlawn Avenue.

The  Sterns yard is a pollinator paradise, with a variety of pollinator-friendly plants that are watered with rain barrels that are placed around the house. The Sterns practice integrated pest management, identifying and removing pests organically while allowing beneficial insects to flourish. To make sure their soil is healthy, they do regular soil tests through the Virginia Cooperative Extension. They have chosen to use plants other than grass in their landscape. They use various types of mulches, including hardwood, leaves, and pine needles to reduce water use and control weeds.

The Sterns received a photographic portrait of their yard as their award.
