[ARCHIVED] Five Hampton Schools Receive Kroger Zero Hunger Zero Waste Plastic Bag Recycling Awards

Four of the five schools that won the Kroger Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge are pictured

The Kroger Company and the Hampton Clean City Commission are very pleased to announce that five Hampton schools have received the first inaugural Zero Hunger Zero Waste Plastic Bag Recycling Awards, instituted for the first time in the 2018-2019 school year.

First Place Winners. $1,000:

Elementary: Hampton Christian Academy Lower School, 24 pounds per student

Secondary: Phenix School, 0.5 pounds per student

Second Place Winners, $750:

Elementary: Rivermont School Hampton Roads, 1 pound per student

Secondary: Kecoughtan High School, .1 pounds per student

Third Place Winner, $500:

Elementary: Booker Elementary School, .4 pounds per student

A total of 3,656 pounds of plastic bags were collected in the contest, an estimated 281,512 bags! The bags were taken to local retailers who send them to plastic film manufacturers for recycling into various products that include plastic lumber and new plastic bags.
