[ARCHIVED] Dorian expected to bring rain, flooding and winds to Hampton Roads today

Sept. 6, 2019 – Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring flooding and rain to Hampton today as it continues moving northeast. The National Weather Service at Wakefield said winds of 39-57 mph are possible, with gusts up to 60 mph. Hampton remains under both a storm surge and a tropical storm warning, with a storm surge of 6.5 feet predicted for Sewells Point this afternoon. Flooding in low lying areas is expected and motorists should avoid driving down flooded roads. Water can rise faster than expected in flash flooding situations and only 12" of water can carry a vehicle away. Please be mindful of driving down roads with standing water and drive slowly enough to keep water from pushing into nearby homes.

All city facilities and offices will be closed today, and there will be no trash pickup. Trash pickup is expected to resume Saturday if conditions allow. Hampton City Schools are also closed, along with the offices of the Fort Monroe Authority. Hampton Roads Transit has suspended bus, ferry, light rail and para-transit services. Nearly 30 people spent the night in city shelters Thursday night. The shelters opened at 5 p.m. Thursday. Dominion Power is reporting approximately 619 households in Hampton are without power.
