Sept. 2, 2019 - Hurricane Dorian is quickly moving north into the Carolinas and could reach Hampton Roads as a Category 2 storm as early as Thursday afternoon with sustained winds of 34-45 mph and gusts of 60 mph. The National Weather Service said moderate coastal flooding is predicted, with major flooding possible in some areas. A statewide evacuation would likely be by zone, with Zone A being the lower coastal areas.

Residents are encouraged to go online to find your evacuation zone based on your street address. You can also view a zone map at www.hampton.gov. A hurricane watch Tuesday afternoon extended to Duck, N.C., with additional advisories likely to be issued later Tuesday or early Wednesday. Hampton officials continue to monitor the storm's path, with Public Works crews working 12-hour shifts.

It's also National Preparednesss Month, which promotes disaster and emergency planning. During week 1 (Sept. 1-7), the theme is Save Early for Disaster Costs. In Week 2 (Sept. 8-14), the theme is Make a Plan to Prepare for Disasters. In Week 3 (Sept. 15-21), the theme is Teach Youth to prepare for Disasters. And during week 4 (Sept. 22-30), the theme is Get Involved in Your Community’s Preparedness.
