Sept. 3, 2019 - The threat of severe weather Thursday evening has prompted the cancellation of an outdoor "pep rally" for city employees to welcome Hampton University students.

--------

Aug. 27, 2019 - The City of Hampton and Hampton University are planning a pep rally Thursday, Sept. 5, to welcome Hampton University students back to campus. Employees are invited and encouraged to wear a city or department logo shirt if they have one.

The rally will be in Mill Point Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The HU Marching Force and HU cheerleaders will perform, and Coach Robert Prunty will introduce the football team. Food trucks will be on site, and DJ Vince will provide music beginning at 5:45 p.m.

Steven Lynch, Hampton's senior business development manager, and Pamela Richardson, director of marketing and promotions for Hampton University, have helped organize the event. Both are members of the city's Town & Gown Committee.

"This is an opportunity for the City of Hampton to show support for the Hampton University students," said Lynch. "We want them to know that we welcome them back to campus."

Lynch said this is the first time the city has held such an event, but that he hopes it will become an annual event that keeps growing.
