May 22, 2019 - The U.S. Air Force wants to hear from area residents about a recent plan to move an F-22 fighter jet training unit from Florida to Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Before the plan is finalized, the Air Force has asked residents to go online and comment as part of a required environmental impact statement. Comments must be postmarked by June 24 to be considered in the draft impact statement.

Langley Air Force Base in Hampton is the oldest continually active air force base in the world. Langley is already home to the Air Force's 633d Air Base Wing, 1st Fighter Wing, and the 480th Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing.

Bruce Sturk, director of federal facilities for Hampton, said in March that the city "is extremely pleased to be the host city for Joint Base Langley-Eustis, specifically Langley Air Force Base. And we're excited about the recent basing decision. The new unit would bring some 800 airmen and their families to the Hampton Roads area,  so “the economic benefits to both the city of Hampton and Hampton Roads will be significant,” Sturk said.
