April 19, 2019 - The heavy rainfalls that will accompany a band of thunderstorms Friday afternoon and overnight could dump as much as 3 inches of rain on southeast Virginia, the National Weather Service said. A flash flood watch was issued for Friday afternoon and evening.

In addition, heavy winds pose a threat that could knock down trees and power lines, with predicted gusts of 40 mph along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline.

Recent rainfalls have left much of the ground saturated, raising concerns about localized flash flooding. There is also potential for tornadoes to form, warned the Weather Service. Residents are advised to monitor conditions and remain safe.

The second band of storms is expected to hit the Hampton area between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., and move off the coast by 2 a.m.

Residents should be alert for additional warnings and take immediate protective action if tornado warnings are issued.

Hampton City Schools has canceled after-school activities for Friday.

The weather service said conditions will be favorable for tornadoes across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina.
