New office dedicated to DMV Select officially opens in Ruppert Sargent Building

DMV select

April 10, 2019 - State officials, city leaders and members of the public were all on hand Wednesday morning when a new, dedicated office for DMV select officially opened on the first floor of Hampton's Ruppert Sargent building.

DMV Select offers most but not all of the services of a traditional DMV office, including vehicle title and registration, license plates, decals, disabled parking placards and more. While DMV Select has been sharing space in the first floor offices of the city treasurer and commissioner of the revenue since 2010, the new, dedicated space for DMV Select makes it even easier for residents to take care of business. The new space is right next to the windows used by the Treasurer's staff.

Richard Holcomb, Commissioner of Virginia's Department of Motor Vehicles, said that in addition to making it easier for area residents to take care of their motor vehicle needs, DMV Select has brought in $11.5 million to the Commonwealth and the city has been paid more than $400,000 as a state partner.

Holcomb also said Hampton has "one of the nicest offices we've got."

He said the new, dedicated space is especially timely because traditional DMV offices will be swamped in coming months with people looking to upgrade their drivers' license so they comply with new federal I.D. requirements that go into effect Oct. 1.

Mayor Donnie Tuck, Commissioner of the Revenue Ross Mugler, State Senator T. Montgomery Mason and Del. Jeion Ward also spoke during the ceremony, which was hosted by the office of Hampton Treasurer Molly Ward. City Manager Mary Bunting,  Council members Linda Curtis and Billy Hobbs, and Council Clerk Katherine Glass were also at the ceremony.

The DMV Select office is inside the Treasurer/Revenue office at 1 Franklin St. It is open from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
