[ARCHIVED] VDOT repairs to I-64 bridge over Armistead Avenue to close one eastbound entrance ramp

Unknown

Feb. 8, 2019 - The Virginia Department of Transportation will make emergency repairs to a portion of the eastbound Interstate 64 bridge over Armistead Avenue near LaSalle Avenue. Work will begin next week and is scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day. The major impacts to traffic are:

  • Traffic headed northbound on LaSalle Avenue will not be able to enter the on-ramp to I-64 eastbound because the work area is too close to the entrance ramp. That will last the entire six months of construction.
  • In addition, there will be closures of Armistead Avenue under the overpass.

The detour for eastbound 64 is: traffic will continue north on LaSalle, turn left on Mercury Boulevard West ramp, turn left on North Armistead Avenue and right onto LaSalle Avenue West and enter the ramp to I-64 East on the right.

The first closure will start as early as next week for Armistead westbound (toward LaSalle Avenue/Mercury Boulevard Avenue) for demolition and installation of new beams. That detour will start near downtown, where westbound drivers will be advised to turn left on Pembroke Avenue, then right on LaSalle Avenue, then left again on Armistead.

Later in the spring, eastbound Armistead will close for about six weeks while beams over that part of the road are demolished and new ones installed. Traffic will be rerouted to turn right on LaSalle, left on Pembroke Avenue, and right on Armistead toward downtown.
