[ARCHIVED] New Martin Luther King Jr. and Hampton Heroes Memorial Plaza dedicated Monday

Hampton Heroes Plaza

Jan. 22, 2019 - More than 300 people were at the Hampton Roads Convention Center Monday for the dedication of the new Martin Luther King Jr. and Hampton Heroes Memorial Plaza.

Located in front of the convention center, the plaza includes the name of Martin Luther King Jr. and more than 25 men and women who were instrumental in Hampton's history, including the start of the Civil War contraband decision, the founding of Hampton University, working as a Hidden Figures at Langley Research Center, and helping integrate Hampton City Schools during the '60s.

Short introductions were read by City Council members as honorees, their family members and others listened attentively in the convention center lobby. Many in the crowd later walked outside to look at the memorial's panels. "We are here this afternoon to recognize not just Dr. King, but a dedicated group of men and women who spent much of their lives doing for others  - building bridges and working for social justice and equal rights," said Mayor Donnie Tuck. The memorial is considered a living monument, with more names being added in the future.
