Hampton's new WorkOne Center opened Friday morning at Y.H. Thomas complex

Nov. 30, 2018 - More than 50 people attended the grand opening Friday morning of Hampton's new WorkOne Center at the Y.H. Thomas complex, 1300 Thomas St.

The center is part of Workforce Hampton, a city initiative that makes resources and services more accessible to the unemployed, underemployed and underserved.

Charles Rigney, Hampton's new economic development director, said the center is a place where "residents can come and get prepared for careers." City Manager Mary Bunting called the center a "labor of love." And Pam Croom, workforce development coordinator in Economic Development, said: "We're looking forward to some very great programs that will be offered here."

Highlighting some of the resources that will be available at the center, including computers that can be used by job seekers, and programs that range from hotel hospitality classes to training in social media that can be used to help small businesses develop and maintain an online presence.

Hampton's partners at the center include the Greater Peninsula Workforce Development Board; Virginia Career Works, Greater Peninsula Region; the Virginia Employment Commission; Hampton University, University College; Thomas Nelson Community College; New Horizons Regional Education Centers Youth Workforce Center; Goodwill Industries; Job Corps; and Rose & Womble Realty.

Mayor Donnie Tuck highlighted the role the center can play in making the community aware of work-related services that are available in Hampton, especially those who are actively looking for work or help to find a job.
