October 12, 2018 - City Manager's Message: Delayed opening  at 10 AM on Friday 10-12-18

Last night Hampton received strong winds that impacted power across the city. We had many downed trees and power lines. Our city crews worked all night to address downed trees to the best of their ability. They are unable to remove trees with downed power lines or power lines themselves without Dominion Power. Dominion Power has limited support overnight, but have additional staffing coming on board at 6 am.

Because of their excellent teamwork, Hampton is in good shape this morning. Major roads are clear and those limited intersections without power are receiving generators. Some side roads are awaiting the DVP assistance for clearing, but all neighborhoods should be passable through some means.

However, we do have power outages across the city which resulted in Hampton City Schools needing to close today. They were further impacted by some of the side roads their buses need to traverse.

Because of the power impacts and to give employees more time to deal with potential delays in travel, we have decided to delay opening until 10 AM for non-emergency essential personnel. We will also offer liberal leave for non-emergency essential personnel who may need to be at home for school-age children or other reasons. As a reminder, liberal leave needs to be coordinated with our supervisor and/or department head.

I want to publicly thank all of our team members who worked throughout the night to keep Hampton safe and respond to storm impacts. We have an amazing team of professionals who go above and beyond to take care of our community, and we appreciate you all very much!
