Sept. 14, 2018 - Gov. Ralph Northam's evacuation order is lifted, now that the area is no longer under a tropical storm warning. The highest predicted tide is still ahead, at 1:30 p.m., and residents are reminded to avoid driving on roads covered by water.

Tides are expected to remain at higher-than-normal levels through Saturday, but predictions have been revised down to "minor" rather than "moderate." 

Some people staying in the city's two shelters have already left, and plans are being made to close the shelters later today.

Public Works will resume trash collection on Saturday. Thursday and Friday customers should put their trash toters and bulk items at the curb late Friday, as collections will begin very early on Saturday. We will complete those routes as quickly as we can. However, there will be no recycling pickup because the facility that processes Hampton's recycling is unable to reopen this weekend. Some areas may experience tidal flooding, and we will get to those areas as soon as we can.

The city will resume normal operations at facilities that are normally open on the weekend, such as parks and libraries.

Dominion has seen scattered outages in Hampton, largely due to trees on lines, and has been responding. Most were restored by Friday afternoon. 

City Manager Mary Bunting said, "Our thoughts are with those in North Carolina, and we will be assessing how we can support them. Some people may say, in hindsight, that some of our preparations and precautions were unnecessary, but we would rather be over-prepared rather than under-prepared when it comes to public safety."
