Swimming advisory lifted for Buckroe Beach after resampling completed Thursday

Buckroe Beach- Lifeguard stand

Aug. 30, 2018 – The swimming advisory issued Wednesday for Buckroe Beach was lifted Thursday after new samplings showed that the bacteria levels in the water met state standards.

The Health Department regularly monitors recreational salt water for enterococci bacteria during the summer swimming season.  While enterococci bacteria themselves don't cause illness, their presence indicates that there is fecal contamination and other harder-to-detect bacterial present. The most common illnesses caused are gastrointestinal.

Everyone is reminded to observe these guidelines as they enjoy the summer swimming season:

  • Don't swim in water that looks stagnant or muddy or smells unpleasant.
  • Avoid swallowing river, stream, lake or other recreational water.
  • Prevent direct contact between broken skin and recreational water.
  • Avoid swimming in natural bodies of water – rivers, streams, lakes, etc. – for several days after a heavy rain.
