National Weather Service issues heat advisory for area Wednesday afternoon

Heat Index

Aug. 28, 2018 - The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a heat advisory for this area from noon-7 p.m. Wednesday. A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperature is expected, and the heat index is expected to reach about 105 degrees Wednesday afternoon.

Hampton's Office of Emergency Managements reminds residents that prolonged exposure to any strenuous activity when it's hot could lead to heat-related illnesses that require medical attention, so you should:

  • Take extra precautions, especially if you work or spend time outside.
  • Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible, and drink plenty of water

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call 9-1-1.

The Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor and update.
