July 3, 2018 – State officials said Tuesday afternoon that dead fish found on Buckroe and Fort Monroe beaches Tuesday were the result of a commercial fishing boat dumping unwanted fish waste.

After the fish were found, state officials issued a swimming advisory for the Salt Ponds, Fort Monroe and Buckroe beaches. Hampton’s Parks and Recreation department staff was working Tuesday with other departments and offices to clean up the dead fish manually and to make sure the beaches are clear and safe for visitors.

Also Tuesday, the Hampton Health District issued a swimming advisory for Buckroe Beach South -starting at about 100 First St. and continuing south - due to elevated bacteria levels in samples that were taken Monday.

The Health Department regularly monitors recreational waters for bacteria during the summer swimming season. Additional samples were taken Tuesday and the results will be available Wednesday.
