July 5, 2018 - Do you know your zone?

In 2017, Virginia introduced a new tiered evacuation system to let residents know whether they should evacuate during a hurricane or other emergency. The new zones are designated A, B, C and D.

When a storm or other emergency is developing, state and local emergency management officials will work together to decide which areas - or zones - are most at risk. A storm's intensity, path, speed, tides and other factors are taken into consideration and, depending on the emergency, being safe might mean staying at home, taking a short trip to higher or safer ground, or traveling to a different region of the state.

You can find out your zone by visiting the Know Your Zone website, which includes a detailed, interactive, color-coded map showing each evacuation zone. You can use the map to look at your region, your city or your street. The state website includes a list of frequently asked questions, a link to a hurricane evacuation guide, and tips for creating an emergency supply kit.  The latest forecast from experts at Colorado State University predict a "below-average" Atlantic hurricane season.
